Alumni raise $10,000 to support Loyola football team
The alumni and friends of the Alpha Delta Gamma (ADG) fraternity at Loyola University Chicago raised more than $10,000 to help support Loyola’s club football team during a September golf outing at the Fresh Meadows Golf Course in Hillside, IL. Now in its second year, the football team, which competes in the Great Lakes Conference’s West Division of the National Club Football Association, has an operating budget of $30,000.
“Because we are a club team, we have to raise money to pay for almost everything, so ADG’s golf outing was a huge help,” said Bobby O’Mullan, the team’s starting linebacker and club president who is a junior majoring in economics and finance.
Loyola doesn’t have a football field, so the team members had to find places to play its four home games as well as locate suitable practice fields. In addition, the team members had to find coaches, hire officials, purchase pads and uniforms, and rent buses to the away games. “We feel like we really live up to our school’s nickname ‘Ramblers,’” O’Mullan said. “Two of our games had to be played at Glenbard South High School in Glen Ellyn and our two other home games are scheduled at Loyola Academy in Wilmette. We couldn’t get one practice field that had what we needed, so now we practice at three different locations.”
O’Mullan started working to bring back club football after a 40 year plus absence three years ago, while still a freshman. “I played varsity football at Hinsdale Central High School and like most of my teammates, I just love football. Last year, most of the players on our team had never played organized football and we had a tough time. We were lucky in that we found a coach, John Clarke, who is a great teacher. He had coached a women’s professional football team, the Chicago Force, to a national championship, so he knew how to teach players the game."
Included in this year's team are 28 players who played varsity football in high school. “We do in one practice what it took three weeks to learn last year,” joked O'Mullan.
O’Mullan is helping to organize a Loyola University football alumni reunion on campus Saturday, October 19. As part of the weekend, he hopes everyone will come to watch the 2013 Loyola University Ramblers football team play Robert Morris Peoria on Sunday, October 20 at noon, at Loyola Academy.
